Clear skies are at such a premium this “spring,” it’s hard to decide how to spend your day in the sun. When it comes to savouring a rare, balmy moment, nothing beats sitting on a patio with a drink in hand and another on the way.
From the raw wood fencing to the comfort-food menu, this Mount Pleasant patio feels like a country porch, albeit one populated by a bumper crop of hipsters. While there aren’t any rocking chairs, there are daily drink specials and a selection of seasonal beers, including a gluten-free option. 3096 Main St., 604-873-1441
Hidden away in a courtyard on the fourth floor of the Rosewood Hotel Georgia, Reflections is as close to a poolside bar as you’ll get with B.C.’s current liquor laws. An infinity pool with waterfall wraps around private cabanas and a central fire pit at one end while the hotel’s ozonated indoor pool flanks the other. The crowd tends to skew short skirts and the suits that chase them, but you’ll hardly notice thanks to senior bartender Robyn Gray’s classic tipples. 801 W. Georgia St., 604-682-5566
This Cuban-themed institution celebrates its 16th anniversary this year. One sip of their sangria and you’ll know why. Across from Grandview Park with a terrific view overlooking downtown, the shabby-chic patio is one of the best people-watching spots in the city. 1212 Commercial Dr., 604-253-9119
Cactus Club English Bay
The newest (and best) addition to the al fresco scene, this swanky, glass-railed patio is literally on the beach — which accounts for the waiting times of up to two hours (no reservations). If the best seats in town aren’t enough for you, the 98 Days of Summer program will draw you in with three featured summer sippers available for $4 from Sunday to Wednesday. 1790 Beach Ave., 604-681-2582
